Azure Managed Disks are the new and recommended disk storage offering for use with Azure virtual machines for persistent storage of data. You can use multiple Managed Disks with each virtual machine. We offer four types of Managed Disks — Ultra Disk, Premium SSD Managed Disks, Standard SSD Managed Disks, Standard HDD Managed Disks. For Azure Managed Disks, you will be billed on an hourly basis.

Premium SSD Managed Disks

Premium SSD Managed Disks are high performance Solid State Drive (SSD) based Storage designed to support I/O intensive workloads with significantly high throughput and low latency. With Premium SSD Managed Disks, you can provision a persistent disk and configure its size and performance characteristics.

The total cost of Premium SSD Managed Disks depends on the size and number of the disks, and will be affected by the number of outbound data transfers. These disk sizes provide different input/output operations per sec (IOPS), throughput caps, and monthly price per GiB. You choose the option that best meets your required storage size, IOPS, and throughput. Attach several persistent disks to a VM and you can configure up to PBs of storage per VM, and achieve 80,000 input/output operations per second, and 1,600 MB per second disk throughput per VM at less than one millisecond latency for read operations (for applications which can take advantage of read caching). Premium SSD Managed Disks are supported by DS-series, DSv2-series, FS-series, and GS-series VM sizes which are specifically targeted for Premium SSD Managed Disks. When using Azure Shared Disks on Premium SSD Managed Disks, each additional mount of the managed disk is charged per month based on the disk size.

Snapshots

You can store full snapshots and images for Premium SSD Managed Disks on Standard storage. You can choose locally redundant (LRS) snapshot options. These snapshots and images are charged at ¥1.221/GB per month for Standard LRS options based on the used portion of the disk. For example, if you create a snapshot of a managed disk with provisioned capacity of 64 GB and actual used data size of 10 GB, snapshot will be billed only for the used data size of 10 GB. If you choose to store them on Premium SSD Managed Disk storage, you’ll be charged at ¥2.353/GB per month.

You can store incremental snapshots for Premium SSD Managed Disks only on Standard storage. They are charged at ¥1.221/GB per month for Standard LRS snapshot options of the storage occupied by the delta changes since the last snapshot. For example, you are using a managed disk with provisioned size of 128 GB and used size of 100 GB. The first incremental snapshot is billed only for the used size of 100 GB. 20 GB of data is added on the disk before you created the second snapshot. Now, the second incremental snapshot is billed for only 20 GB.

Bursting

For P20 disks and smaller, bursting is enabled by default with no additional costs. You can boost your performance up to 3,500 IOPS and 170 MB/s for up to 30 min to handle spiky traffic, process batch jobs, and improve boot times.

For P30 disks and larger, you will be charged a monthly enablement fee to enable bursting and a burst transaction fee per 10,000 IOs for additional IOPS. You can boost your performance up to 30,000 IOPS over a short duration of time. For example, if you provision a P30 disk with 5,000 IOPS and you burst to 30,000 IOPS, you will be charged the enablement fee to enable the bursting feature as well as a burst transaction fee for the additional 25,000 IOPS. If you burst your throughput above the provisioned amount, you will also be charged a burst transaction fee for the additional throughput. We charge a burst transaction fee for P30 disks and larger with bursting enabled. Any type of operation against the storage is counted as a transaction, including reads, writes, and deletes. For more details on burst transactions, please refer to the bursting documentation.

Standard SSD Managed Disks

Standard SSD Managed Disks, a low-cost SSD offering, are optimized for test and entry-level production workloads requiring consistent latency. Standard SSD Managed Disks can also be used for big data workloads that require high throughput. Standard SSD Managed Disks deliver lower latency compared to Standard HDDs, while improving reliability and scalability for your applications, and are available with all Azure VM sizes. Standard SSD Managed Disks can be easily upgraded to Premium SSD Managed Disks for more demanding and latency-sensitive enterprise workloads. Offered as a managed disk solution, Standard SSD Managed Disks come with the same industry leading durability and availability that you expect from Premium SSD Managed Disks.

The total cost of Standard SSD Managed Disk storage depends on the size and number of disks, the number of transactions, and the number of outbound data transfers.

We charge ¥0.02 per 10,000 transaction units for Standard SSD Managed Disks. Any type of operation against the storage is counted as a transaction, including reads, writes and deletes. We use IO unit size of 256 KiB for counting the billable transaction units. Please refer to Standard SSD documentation for more information.

Standard HDD Managed Disks

Standard HDD Managed Disks use Hard Disk Drive (HDD) based Storage media. They are best suited for dev/test and other infrequent access workloads that are less sensitive to performance variability.

The total cost of Standard HDD Managed Disk storage depends on the size and number of disks, the number of transactions, and the number of outbound data transfers.

We charge RMB 0.0044 for every 10,000 Standard Managed Disk transaction. Any type of operations for storage are considered to be transactions, including: reads, writes and deletions.

The Managed Disk itself doesn’t provide a Service Level Agreement with financial support. The availability of a Managed Disk depends on the Service Level Agreement governing the basic storage used and the Virtual Machine it’s attached to.
