SQL Data Warehouse uses Microsoft’s massively parallel processing (MPP) architecture to gain insights on acquisition time (rather than hardware) costs, with payment based on performance targets for basic data warehousing operations such as scanning, loading and query processing). SQL Data Warehouse uses the columnstore indexes within SQL Server’s internal storage and a cost-based Premium query optimizer to provide the best prices and performance.

SQL Data Warehouse is based on SQL Server’s time-tested relational database engine and includes the functions you would expect to find in enterprise data warehouses, including storage processes, user customizable functions, table partitioning, indexing, and collation. SQL Data Warehouse uses the same database engine as SQL Server and Microsoft Analytics Platform System to achieve consistency between cloud-based, local and device solutions, allowing you to select the optimal location to save data based on performance, security and scaling requirements. In terms of end-to-end solutions, it provides seamless data migration between local and cloud systems, as well as Extract, Transform and Load (ETL) processes.
Query across relational and non-relational data
Using PolyBase, you can seamlessly use Transact-SQL to perform queries that span relational data in relational databases and non-relational data in common Hadoop formats. Individual Transact-SQL commands integrate non-relational data in Azure Blob Storage with the relationships in the data warehouse, enabling you to perform deep data mining, reporting and analysis using existing Transact-SQL techniques.
